Concrete Interlocking Tile — The Post-War Standard
From the 1950s onwards, concrete interlocking tiles became the dominant roofing material on new UK housing. Compared to clay plain tile, concrete interlocking tile has several practical advantages: it's cheaper to manufacture, faster to lay (each tile covers more area and requires fewer nails), and more dimensionally consistent. The interlocking side and head joints also eliminate the need for the double lap required with plain tile, reducing both material and labour costs.

How to Identify Which You Have
From the ground, the easiest distinguishing feature is the surface texture and profile. Clay plain tiles have a flat or very gently cambered surface with a handmade quality — even machine-pressed clay tiles have a slightly irregular, organic appearance when viewed from an angle. Concrete interlocking tiles have a more uniform surface and a pronounced interlocking profile at the side joints — you can see the overlap pattern clearly on the exposed surface.
Colour is a guide but not definitive — both materials weather significantly over time. The most reliable ground-level indicator is the tile profile: a plain flat tile with no visible interlocking flange is clay plain tile; a tile with a clearly ribbed or profiled surface with visible side overlap is almost certainly concrete interlocking.
